«SPE»: to be on a friendly footing with the basics of the petroleum world

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) --The head of Uzbekistan has set a clear goal of preparing qualified specialists at universities, linking curricula and research activities with the production process, and widely incorporating advanced world experience into the educational sector.

The student section “SPE” (Society of Petroleum Engineers) is successfully functioning in the Branch of the Russian State University of Oil and Gas (NRU) named after I.M.Gubkin in Tashkent. This international nonprofit professional organization of oil industry technicians is existing in 144 countries of the world and has 168 thousand participants out of which 68 thousand are students of specialized world universities, including representatives from Uzbekistan.

The President of the SPE Dishod Abdukarimov and its active participant Timur Sharibayev have told about the SPE activities:

The main aim of creating the SPE student division is the accumulation and dissemination of professional knowledge in the field of the petroleum industry. The development of students’ scientific potential is carried out by providing the opportunity to participate in international oil and gas conferences, access to the OnePetro electronic library, which has more than 165 thousand technical articles in English and 1300 in Russian. In order to familiarize the world experts in this field with students, they organize lectures and master classes with invited well-known foreign experts. In addition, it involves the study and practice of engineering and economic English required by future specialists in the oil and gas industry of our country. As part of the work of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, practical group classes are organized in Tashkent for “Gubkin students”, in which leading experts of oil and gas companies or senior students help with the analysis and explanation of the most difficult technical issues, such as logging diagrams.

Our regular events include weekly classes in the PetroEnglishClub, the extracurricular activities of English for Specific Purposes which are taught by the students themselves who are fluent in English. In addition, a team project on programming Coder ++ is functioning in terms of its performance. Practical aspects of geological well surveys are considered in the course of weekly lessons of the same name GIS club. It is noteworthy that one of the university students, Amir Karimov, came to us with the idea of organizing the club, and we fully supported his initiative. The value of innovation is that it provides a unique opportunity to be engaged in geophysical research of wells from the very beginning and is intended not only for geophysicists, but will be useful for all areas of training, since geophysics is an integral part of the study, drilling and development.

In addition to the above-mentioned sections, we also have the “Club Simply about Complicated”, which is especially demanded by students of elementary courses. Its essence is that senior students share their knowledge and experience in a certain direction of the professional sector: for example, students of the Faculty of Economics explain in complicated language complex concepts of their field, the same among other faculties. Furthermore, the project team “SPE Talks” introductory lectures and master classes which are provided by the leading experts of the petroleum industry.
