Forewarned is forearmed

A round table on countering radicalism, sectarianism and proselytism was held in the conference hall of the Branch of the Russian State University of Oil and Gas (NRU) named after I.M.Gubkin in Tashkent city.

The administration, faculty members and students of academic groups participated in the round table meeting.

The event was opened by the deputy director on educational affairs Yuzlikayeva, E.R., who noted that in the era of globalization, information processes are having an increasing impact on the development of public relations. However, the Internet and social networks, which have become an integral part of people's lives, are used not only for good purposes - scientific, educational, communicative and others, but they can pose a real danger in terms of the spread of ideas of radicalism and sectarianism that threaten the development of a democratic society. For this reason, for all the variety of ways and speeds of information transfer, there is an objective need to establish criteria and limits of admissibility of content for compliance with various requirements, including moral, religious and legal ones.

The research scientist of the Islamic Academy Nurullo Turambetov, who made a presentation, considered the threats that arise from the expansion of Islamist radicalism, sectarianism and proselytism in the sphere of modern secular society. The expert warned that the radical Islam spread in the world should be recognized as politicized by the sectarian movement, as indicated by such signs as: a clearly negative attitude to the existing government and the desire for power; political struggle tactics; developed propaganda mechanism and means of propaganda. After all, in carrying out their activities, the Islamists are actively using advanced achievements and technologies of the IT sphere, social networks, the Internet, as well as the media.

Having determined the features of the penetration of malicious ideas, the speaker once again highlighted that among the reasons for their growth and cultivation, the lack of moral education and basic legal literacy can be identified. It is the crisis phenomena in the moral sphere of modern society, according to the expert, that is one of the main actual problems bearing today the greatest criminogenic potential, which is increasingly manifested in extremist crimes and terrorism. At the same time, extremist and terrorist activities are supported by the organization and funded through various "missionary" religious and other organizations and movements and their representative offices. It is in this way that literary publishing and other propaganda activities of an extremist nature are being carried out, propagating ideas of nationalism and separatism, provoking and maintaining interethnic and interfaith conflicts, creating prerequisites for mass violations of public order, armed conflicts and coups.

Having mentioned social danger of radical Islamists, the participants of the round table noted the fact that in order to make their arguments convincing in the religious sphere, recruiters speculate about the lack of basic knowledge about the dogmas of true Islam, are guided as arguments by a particular quote, literally pulled out of the Quran or the Sunnah. After criticizing social problems, extremists point out that the existing state power is not able to cope with these problems, the policy implemented by the authorities is godless and for this reason it is unsuccessful, and turning to the “true” faith will allow them, achieving universal welfare and equality of Muslims, that is, there is an invisible, unobtrusive ideological treatment of the population.

Having received further expert explanations, the participants of the round table decided to hold thematic informational hours in groups, to highlight the relevant topic raised in preventive conversations with students.
