Journey to the country of the language being studied: an English quiz at the sponsored academic lyceum

A significant phenomenon in recent years, associated with improving the quality of education, has been the dynamic development of interaction between lyceums and universities. Such cooperation enables not only to give students a complete secondary education, to prepare them for entering a university, but also to promote the development of their cognitive and communicative abilities, the formation of creative and scientific thinking. The result of this kind of interaction is the formation of a personality-oriented model of education, in which it is possible to educate a future creative personality in a specially organized environment.

Such interaction is successfully implemented between the Branch of the Russian State University of Oil and Gas (NRU) named after. I.M. Gubkin in Tashkent and his sponsored lyceum. On March 3, 2022, a quiz on the topic “Country of the language being studied” was held at the sponsored academic lyceum with the participation of the faculty of the Department of Foreign Languages ​​of the Branch Razikova D.S. and Bakhromova I.T.

The quiz was held with students of the lyceum group E1-20. The aim of this event was to update students’ knowledge about culture, politics, places of interest, geographical features of Great Britain, to activate previously learned lexical and grammatical material, to expand the horizons of lyceum students by studying historical, regional studies material about the country of the language being studied, to develop skills in oratory and public speaking, and also increased interest in the study of the history and culture of Great Britain as a country of the language being studied.

The quiz was held in 3 stages: team tournament, blitz poll, captains’ competition. At each stage, students demonstrated both foreign language proficiency and knowledge of regional studies, history and culture of Great Britain. In addition, this event was of great educational value and set itself the goal of raising interest in the English language and the country of the language being studied, i.e. increasing students' motivation for the subject. The quiz contributed to the formation of a versatile and harmonious development of the individual, the development of the quality of cooperation and interaction, the spirit of competition and leadership qualities.

During the quiz, the students demonstrated enthusiasm and high activity, showed discipline and demonstrated their knowledge. Despite the spirit of competition and the desire to win, a friendly atmosphere of mutual understanding and interest reigned at the event. The students rated the quiz as interesting and informative and at the end expressed their gratitude to the faculty of the “Foreign Languages” Department of for organizing and holding such an event.
