The week of English language

With the aim of efficient organization of students’ leisure in their free time, as well as to create an English-speaking environment in the Branch, the Department of Foreign Languages held a debate in English among 1st year students of academic groups UEE-21-11, UEE-21-12, UEM- 21-13, UEM-21-14. This event was implemented within the framework of subject team-circles, which activities are carried out at the Department of Foreign Languages.

The topic of the debate - Social media is the leading cause of violence in today’s society aroused great interest among students. The debate participants were divided into 2 teams, one team – Proposers - approved the thesis, and the other – Opposers - refuted it, giving counterarguments. The heated discussion of the debate participants was evaluated by a strict jury, consisting of the faculty of the department, and also included one participant from each team.

It should be noted that holding this kind of debate contributes to the development of students’ skills of formation and the ability to defend their position, oratory and the ability to conduct a dialogue, the development of team spirit and leadership qualities. In addition, debates help to develop critical thinking, a communicative culture, and also to form research skills, since the arguments presented require evidence and examples, which require work with information sources to find.

The head of the department, Associate Professor Kadirbekova D.Kh. held a master class in UEE-21-11 academic group on the topic “Entrepreneurship”. This event was aimed at the formation of the communicative competence of students in the process of discussing the proposed topic. Students developed teamwork skills, solving specific problems during the discussion, searching for information in different sources, discussing the topic, expressing their opinion and arguing it. I would especially like to note the “Make your pitch” case, during which the students demonstrated not only knowledge of the English language, but also the ability to make presentations, skills in working with authentic sources of information and creativity in solving problems.

In addition, within the framework of the English language week at the Branch, the “Foreign Languages” Department organized and conducted the IELTS Mock Test for everyone who would like to test their English language skills. In this regard, the test was fully consistent with the authentic IELTS test, which helped the test participants, represented by both the Branch employees and students, not only test their knowledge, but also feel the very atmosphere of passing the exam for an international certificate.

On the eve of International Women’s Day, a Spelling check (dictation for spell checking) was held in all academic groups on the topic “Role of Women in Society”.

Activities aimed at creating an English-speaking environment in the Branch will be continued in the future, which will undoubtedly contribute to improving the level of professional English proficiency.
