Delivering a master class on structural interpretation of seismic data

In order to implement the Third Initiative (enhancing the skills of the population and youth in using computer technologies and the Internet) of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sh.M. Mirziyoyevthe, the Branch of Russian State University of Oil and Gas (NRU) named after I.M. Gubkin in Tashkent held a master class with a teacher of the Department of Geological and Geophysical Exploration Technologies - Tokareva Ksenia Mujakhidovna on the structural interpretation of seismic data devoted to the discussion of the methods of extracting seismic impulses and obtaining the“time-depth” law.

The master class was held in order to improve the skills of senior students in the modern software packages “Petrel” and “CGG Hampson-Russell Software”, as well as to improve the level of pedagogical skills of the teacher.

At the seminar, the seismic data structural interpretation scheme was step by step disassembled, starting from the analysis of the initial data and their input into the project, to obtaining the structural frame of the study area. Particular attention was paid to the stage of stratigraphic referencing of reflecting horizons. Stratigraphic referencing of seismic horizons means their identification with the geological boundaries of a known age - the contact of rocks of different lithological composition. Tying is carried out taking into account well data, primarily acoustic and density logs, as well as VSP. Also, the students got acquainted with a very important question: “Where does the seismic impulse come from?” which is crucially important for stratigraphic referencing. First, the teacher explained the theory, which includes three ways of setting the impulse: analytical, statistical and deterministic. In the "question-answer" mode, students learned about all the advantages and disadvantages of each of the methods. After the theoretical part, using real data as an example, the process of stratigraphic binding was shown. Students on their own, on modern computers, were able to complete this process and consolidate their knowledge. All those present really liked the interactive master class, which is remembered for its dynamism. After the seminar, the teacher answered all follow-up questions
