Uzbekistan participates in the geological Olympiad 2019 in Tatarstan

Headed by the most experienced professional mentors, a team of students from Uzbekistan successfully participates in the VI Republican Open Field Olympiad of young geologists in Almetyevsk (the Republic of Tatarstan).

The geological marathon is held on the basis of the children’s recreation camp “Solnechniy” (“Sunny”) and will last until June 24. The large-scale project involves 37 teams from the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, totally over 350 participants.

The composition of the Olympic delegation of Uzbekistan, recommended by joint-stock companies and industry agencies and having a basic understanding of geology, are nine seventh-ninth grade students from the Kashkadarya, Bukhara and Tashkent regions, as well as Tashkent city. The guys were comprehensively prepared and consulted on site during the competitions by the deputy director of the Branch of the Russian State University of Oil and Gas (NRU) named after I.M. Gubkin in Tashkent city on educational affairs, Doctor of Pedagogical sciences, Professor Elzara Yuzlikaeva, Chief geophysicist of the production geological and methodical party of “Uzbekgeofizika” JSC Adilbek Musabekov, Head of the Laboratory of “IGIRNIGM” JSC Bakhtiyor Khojiev.

The opening of the Olympiad was held with the participation of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Tatarstan Rafis Burganov, General Director of “Tatneft” PJSC Nail Maganov, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan Timur Gilyazov, Head of the Executive Committee of the Almetyevsk District Marat Girfanov. They noted the importance of enthusiastic students in geology, emphasizing that the Olympiad will be a kind of ticket to their future profession: it will help not only to make a choice, but also when they enter specialized universities. In addition, as the organizers said, the most productive guys will become participants of the XII All-Russian Open Field Olympiad of young geologists in Novosibirsk.

Olympic weekdays

Even before the start of the Olympiad competitions, which is held with the support of “TATNEFT” PJSC and small oil companies of the republic, the participants presented their expositions to judges: from mock-ups of oil wells and natural monuments to rare rocks, minerals, limestone and salt samples. Here were all sorts of photos from expeditions, pictures of river sand, crafts.

According to the unanimous reviews of the participants, the Olympics are fun and productive. It is noteworthy that in addition to official competitions, there is also a rich cultural program.

Every day, students in numerous competitions test their knowledge of mineralogy, GPS navigation, petrography. Participants confidently demonstrate safety knowledge, ability to use a compass, “read” a geological map, and organize life in the forest. All test tests are not easy, but a demonstration exam combining theory and practice. For example, the organization of field parking is one of the “brand-name” geological contests, when you need to set up speed and a tent, and kindle a fire in any conditions, and boil water in a pot ...

However, the most difficult is the complex competition “Geological Route”, when you need to take the route to a map in four hours, navigate through it and go all the way, describing outcrops and taking samples. This also includes expressing one’s opinions about the geological structure of the territory represented and the search for minerals on it. After checking the field diaries, the judges will give the marks for the work done, out of a hundred possible.

Although the final general results will be summed up on the day of the Olympics closing, today the organizers have already issued letter of gratitude to the mentors for preparing the team of students from Uzbekistan.

Profession of patriots and romantics

As Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Elzara Yuzlikaeva commented on the Olympiad of Young Geologists of the Branch of the Russian State University of Oil and Gas (NRU) named after I.M. Gubkin in Tashkent city, it is difficult to overestimate the significance of the multi-year project in preparing the young shift of specialists in the demanded industry. To extract oil, to raise it to the surface is a huge merit of geologists. Currently, when geology is serving innovative technologies, the latest advances in software, satellite navigation systems and experimental developments, it seems encouraging that the Olympiad provides a wonderful opportunity to comprehend the fundamentals of geology already from the upper grades: this is a good solution in vocational guidance for schoolchildren, practice mastering the basics of the profession of patriots and romantics.
